Past Forward: Electric Hearing

چکیده
Rod Saunders lost his hearing in a car accident 1976. Nearly two years later, Graeme Clark, an Australian ear, nose, and throat surgeon, Brian Pyman, surgeon assisting him, inserted into Saunders’s auditory canal prototype of multichannel cochlear implant. The implant was designed to wirelessly connect external microphone speech-processing unit. Several weeks came back the hospital determine if implant’s electrical stimulation nerve could replicate sound that he hear. It didn’t work. A few days it still Third time charm: After engineers fixed loose connection unit, heard rhythm sang along recording “Waltzing Matilda.” By December able distinguish speech using signals alone. Today hundreds thousands people rely on implants Even so, technology remains controversial within Deaf community.

Psychophysical recovery from single-pulse forward masking in electric hearing.
Psychophysical single-pulse forward-masking (SPFM) recovery functions were measured for three electrodes in each of eight subjects with the nucleus mini-22 cochlear implant. Masker and probe stimuli were single 200-micros/phase biphasic current pulses. Recovery functions were measured at several masker levels spanning the electric dynamic range of electrodes chosen from the apical, middle, and ...

Psychophysical pulse-train forward-masking (PTFM) recovery functions were measured in fifteen subjects with the Nucleus mini-22 cochlear implant and six subjects with the Clarion cochlear implant. Masker and probe stimuli were 500-Hz trains of 200- or 77-micros/phase biphasic current pulses. Electrode configurations were bipolar for Nucleus subjects and monopolar for Clarion subjects. Masker du...

ideas. As he says, the Bilski claims are far more complex and concrete than the simple and ‘‘abstract’’ mathematical formulas the Court previously rejected. Nonetheless, the concurrence provides no clear solution by suggesting a business methods patents ban without defining what a business method might be. Finally, neither the majority nor concurring opinions identify what post-solution activit...
متن کاملForward to the past
Our daily experience shows that the CNS is a highly efficient machine to predict the effect of actions into the future; are we so efficient also in reconstructing the past of an action? Previous studies demonstrated we are more effective in extrapolating the final position of a stimulus moving according to biological kinematic laws. Here we address the complementary question: are we more effect...
متن کاملTemporal pitch in electric hearing.
Both place and temporal codes in the peripheral auditory system contain pitch information, however, their actual use by the brain is unclear. Here pitch data are reported from users of the cochlear implant, which provides the ability to change the temporal code independently from the place code. With fixed electrode stimulation, both frequency discrimination and pitch estimate data show that th...
